It finally happened. Quinn Hughes spoke. After months of speculation, with each fanbase holding on to every report, no matter how contradictory, we heard from Quinn Hughes himself for the first time since locker cleanouts in Minnesota.
Hughes has had a busy summer since taking time away from Minnesota hockey. He’s been traveling around the East Coast, including spending significant time in New Jersey. One place he hasn’t been is Minnesota, but he says that is coming soon.
His comments at Media Day were even more interesting, and telling, than his brother Jack Hughes’ comments. What’s wild about Hughes’s comments is that they can be perceived in multiple ways, which shows his level of media training to get everyone talking without starting an absolute firestorm for his brother later in the day.
But Jack Hughes was not the main event. We waited all day to hear from Quinn Hughes. His comments did not disappoint. Well, unless you were a Minnesota Wild fan hoping to start the season with an extension or a New Jersey Devils fan hoping to get Quinn Hughes in camp through a trade. It now seems like either option is unlikely.
Quinn Hughes says he doesn't "feel backed up against the wall where I have to sign before camp." Doesn't worry about it hanging over his head during the season, either. Said he loves it in Minnesota and the organization has nothing it needs to prove to him.

When looking at the full quote, it's even more telling that Quinn Hughes has no inclination to sign a contract right now. And why should he? We've seen superstar players take their availability all the way to the edge of unrestricted free agency. Knowing that he has a $20 million contract coming, and understanding how Bill Guerin treated another Team USA legend in Zach Parise when his contract no longer made sense, Hughes would be smart to wait.
It's clear that Quinn Hughes is more than happy going into the season without a contract
The Wild roster has serious flaws up top. They have as good of superstars as anyone in the league with Kirill Kaprizov, Matt Boldy, and a superstar goaltending duo, but the depth is in serious trouble. It's to the point that if Bobby Brink and Maxim Shabanov don't make massive strides this season, the Wild are in trouble.
"This is going to be done whenever I feel like it needs to be done. I don't feel backed up against a wall. I'm very thoughtful. I want to make sure I'm taking my time on everything and make sure I'm making a decision that is going to be good for everyone. That's kind of where my head has been at. We haven't had that many conversations just because of how I wanted my summer to go in terms of being fresh and resetting and enjoying and training and being around friends and family. Of course, the Wild are actively trying to get Dylan Larkin, and if they are successful once Detroit hires a GM, that could change everything. Hughes and Larkin are good friends, and that might be the motivation to stick in Minny for at least a few more years.
