In a recent report for Expressen, Swedish reporter Adam Johansson revealed that Jeremy Colliton, the Devils' power play coach who suddenly resigned from the organization this off-season, is pursuing opportunities in the Swedish Hockey League (SHL).
The now-41-year-old coach spent two years with New Jersey, designing a power play system that finished 3rd and 13th in the league, respectively, while having some of the most dominant underlying statistics in the modern era. His departure from the organization came without notice, with early speculation that he was pursuing opportunities outside of hockey altogether.
Clearly, that isn't the case, though, as Johansson reported that multiple SHL organizations have expressed interest in bringing the ex-Blackhawks bench boss in as a coach. That included two head coaching gigs for Luleå HF and HV71, the latter of which is now home to two ex-Devils in Santeri Hatakka and Mike Hardman.
Within the report, Colliton also spoke of why he left the New Jersey Devils for the first time, saying the following:
"I resigned because I realized that I want to build a culture from the ground up again. I want to have a more direct influence on the culture and be more involved in shaping it. So I'm looking for the next opportunity that aligns with that goal. For my family's sake, it's also about finding somewhere where we can be for a longer period of time and where I can run a project like this."Jeremy Colliton
It's clear that a head coaching position is what he is aiming for once again, a title that he has not held since his time with the Abbotsford Canucks in 2023-24. Colliton noted later in the interview that his resignation from the Devils now allows him to pursue such opportunities, having already turned down two jobs while under contract in New Jersey.
He will have to exercise patience, though, as there are no currently vacant head coaching spots in the SHL. Jobs may open up in due time, of course, but he will either have to remain patient or look to a different league if he wants to jump into that role as soon as possible.
