Don’t say you can never go home. That’s exactly what Ryan Carter is doing. The former NHL player and member of the New Jersey Devils' famous fourth line from their 2012 run to the Stanley Cup Final is taking on a head coaching job at his former high school. However, he won’t be the men’s head coach.

Carter, whose best seasons came playing for the Devils, can bring playoff experience to the White Bear Lake girls hockey program.

Carter grew up in Minnesota and ended his career as a part of the Minnesota Wild organization. He also spent time with the Anaheim Ducks, Carolina Hurricanes, and Florida Panthers before joining the Devils’ organization. The Panthers put him on waivers in 2011, and the Devils, who had former Panthers’ head coach Peter DeBoer on the bench, quickly picked him up.

He scored four goals in 65 games during the regular season, but he was a monster in the playoffs. He had five goals in 23 playoff games. He also played on the edge, finishing the playoffs with 32 penalty minutes.

Carter last played for the White Bear hockey program in the 2001-02 season before joining the Green Bay Gamblers of the USHL. Carter would play for Minnesota State before signing a professional contract.

Since he retired, Carter has been a part of the Wild’s broadcast team. It’s not clear if his current commitment will change his job status with the broadcast. However, it’s clear where his priorities lie.

Carter’s daughters have been on the White Bear Lake for a few years, and he’s acted as an assistant coach. Now, he can be their head coach if they still play for the team.

This team has been bad for years, with just eight wins last season, but they hope with Carter in charge, a turnaround is in order.
