Jack Hughes’ family comments could spark a Devils crisis

This summer has been all about Luke, then Jack started talking.

The New Jersey Devils struck gold when they won the 2019 NHL Draft Lottery, giving them the rights to draft phenom prospect Jack Hughes. He has been everything the Devils could have hoped for, and then some, helping lead the Devils to the playoffs twice during his tenure with the team.

Jack already plays on the same team as younger brother Luke, a defenseman for the team. But there has always been questions as to whether or not they will play on the same team as older brother Quinn, who currently plays for the Vancouver Canucks. Quinn's future with the Canucks has been very much in the air, especially after the turmoil the Canucks have undergone.

TSN NHL insider Pierre LeBrun interviewed Jack as part of the NHL Player Media Tour on Tuesday. LeBrun asked Jack about his brother Quinn's future in Vancouver and possibly playing together. Jack brings up New Jersey as a destination, or elsewhere.

"Honestly, I'm not afraid to say it. Yeah, I would love for Quinn to -- eventually I'd love to play with him. And whether that's in New Jersey or at what time that takes, at some point I want to play with Quinn. But yeah, that's the question going around. They talk all day about it up in Vancouver, you know? But yeah I'd love to play with Quinn at some point," Hughes told LeBrun.

Jack Hughes open door to playing with brother Quinn, whether in New Jersey or elsewhere

The last thing the Devils needed to worry about is Jack playing elsewhere to team up with his brothers. It's important to note that Jack is in the midst of an eight-year, $64 million contract that doesn't expire until after the 2029-30 season. And it's hard to imagine the Devils trading Jack away.

As for Quinn, he has two seasons remaining on a six-year, $47.1 million contract, so he could be acquirable via trade, or will hit free agency after the 2026-27 season. And Quinn hasn't verbally committed to remaining in Vancouver, either.

So, there's the chance for Quinn to team up with Jack.

Then there's Luke, who is still unsigned by the Devils as a restricted free agent. That brings some uncertainty, as the Devils try to figure out how long of a commitment they want to make with their second pairing defenseman.

So Jack is a free agent in 2030. It's entirely possible Luke could hit the free agency class around that time, too. What if Quinn takes a new contract in 2027 that ensures he can hit the open market again in 2030 to ensure he and his brothers can come up with a plan to end up on the same team? Talk about an exciting offseason storyline!

We'll never know if the Hughes brothers will ever pair up on the same NHL team, but it sure sounds like Jack wants that to happen eventually. For Devils fans' sakes, they hope it happens in New Jersey, because losing Jack would leave the team with the impossible task of replacing an elite talent like their center.
