New Jersey Devils star Jack Hughes made the most serious contribution to his career this past season, and it wasn’t while he was wearing the red and black for Jersey’s team. Hughes scored the Golden Goal, giving Team USA its first gold medal at the Winter Olympics since the 1980 Miracle on Ice.
Moments like that are honored forever. Unfortunately, Jack Hughes wasn’t happy with how his goal is being displayed. He’s upset with the Hockey Hall of Fame, which is housed in Toronto, Canada, for taking the Golden Goal puck and putting it on display. To be fair, we’d rather it be there than on display in the Hughes family’s Michigan basement. Still, we’d much rather the puck be on display in America.
Will Hughes’s rivalry with the Hockey Hall of Fame ever impact his eligibility? Probably not, but he may not need to worry about it.
Hughes was named alongside 59 others to be inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame. Last year, Martin Brodeur was inducted alongside the Jonas Brothers, CNN’s Dana Bash, and Hubie Brown. One year later, Hughes can join Brodeur and a list of other Devils legends.
Jack Hughes could become a Hall of Famer this year... a New Jersey Hall of Famer
Hughes is one of 10 sports figures listed as Hall of Fame nominees. Some of the other names include New York Giants legend Victor Cruz, superstar broadcaster Jim Nantz (he grew up in Colts Neck and Marlboro), former New York Jets legend Wayne Chrebet, and original Devils owner Dr. John McMullen.
There are plenty of other nominees, including Oscar winner Michael B. Jordan, Simpsons creator James L. Brooks, author of Eat, Pray, Love Elizabeth Gilbert, and sportswriter Peter King.
The final inductees will be announced in June, and the 18th Annual New Jersey Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place in the fall. You can vote for Hughes, Dr. McMullen, and a host of others at the link here. Voting continues until May 5th.
