In a shocking move on Friday, LeBron James made his free agency decision, joining the Philadelphia 76ers after years with the Los Angeles Lakers. The Sixers were already a massive talking point this offseason after trading Paul George and some spare change for Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown.
Most New Jersey Devils fans are reveling in the New York Knicks' NBA Championship, but the ownership group is looking at how to compete with the top team in the Eastern Conference. They put together about as good a team as they could given the second apron reality of the NBA.
When James announced his decision, the NBA world was shocked, but the focus here has to be on ownership. All of a sudden, the first team in the Harris-Blitzer sports emporium is now the focus once again. The Process has been a failure, but this new philosophy might be exactly what they need to finally bring another championship to Philadelphia.
LeBron James is good news for the New Jersey Devils
And honestly, that’s good news for the Devils. The level of manipulation of the Devils’ ownership has been debatable, but under Tom Fitzgerald, that answer was never “none.” Under Sunny Mehta, it seems like ownership is more open to letting things happen and seeing how it works.
Josh Harris is most focused on the Washington Commanders, and David Blitzer has been known to focus on the Devils. For the big moments, they come together.
The Sixers are that moment. Both Harris and Blitzer and the rest of HBSE will be focused on Philadelphia for so many reasons this year. Not only are they a championship contender, but they are working on a new arena. Things are looking up for the 76ers, and that will allow the Devils to work without interruption.
We’ve seen in the past that teams often do better without ownership intervention. Just look at the Knicks. James Dolan finally trusted someone to just do their job and run the Knicks. And now, they are champions. If the Devils let Mehta do his job how he wants to do it, a championship might be coming, as well. And we might have LeBron James to thank.
