New Jersey Devils defenseman Luke Hughes is coming way too close to October without a contract. All of the Devils fanbase is officially sweating about the implications of missing this much of training camp under Sheldon Keefe, but first and foremost, everyone wants a deal to get done.
Unfortunately, the money side of this deal is turning out to be more complicated than we thought. It sounds like both sides are committed to figuring out an eight-year deal, but multiple reports say they are far apart on cash compensation.
While Hughes and Tom Fitzgerald come to an agreement, the youngest Hughes brother made some noise on Monday. He made an unannounced appearance on Polo Ralph Lauren’s Instagram Stories.

There was no context to the picture other than the golf setting that comes right after the Europeans beat the Americans at the Ryder Cup. Polo has a big sponsorship with the American team for the Ryder Cup, and Luke Hughes hopes to once again wear Team USA colors for the Olympics next year.
This is the first time we’ve seen Luke Hughes since his summer escapades with his brothers. It’s honestly just good to see Luke Hughes out here making money. He’s probably got bills to pay.
We’ll continue to follow Luke Hughes’s contract drama, as we hope it comes to an end sooner rather than later. Money being the roadblock here has some fans frustrated, but if he gets into camp this week, he should have plenty of time to get ready for opening night.
