The New Jersey Devils have one of the timeless NHL jerseys in the league. The red and the black match perfectly with the aura that comes with the “Devils” mascot. Their logo is the best in sports. We’ll die on that hill.
The Devils will still get involved in the third jersey. For years, we only saw the seldom-worn throwback jersey to celebrate the red-and-green era under Lou Lamoriello. Once he left, and Adidas took over jerseys for the NHL, the Devils were more open to alternate jerseys. The Reverse Retro gave the Devils a green jersey, which was weird, but it was wildly popular with fans. The next era of Reverse Retro saw the Devils get a red and blue jersey that celebrated their lineage with the Kansas City Scouts.
The one jersey that split fans the most was the first iteration of a black alternate. Otherwise known as the Jersey jersey, the Devils introduced their third jersey in 2021. It lasted five years before it was retired last season.
Some fans loved the jersey, especially as time went on, and some fans never got over the look and the lack of logo. The Devils leaned into their marketing, selling a Hat hat, a Shirt shirt, and other items related to naming the clothing you’re wearing.
The Devils came back with another black jersey for the Stadium Series against the Philadelphia Flyers in 2024, and that one was universally loved. It’s basically what everyone was looking for from a third jersey. Just flip the colors so the jersey is black, and the logo sits there in red.
Now, we’re learning that the NHL might once again go back to black with the next New Jersey Devils jersey.
The newest jersey line from Fanatics will be “Hometown Remix,” according to insider Icethetics. They made educated predictions about what each jersey will look like, and according to the video, the Devils are getting another black jersey.
The video goes on to say that the Devils will likely do something “new and fun.” This probably has Lou Lamoriello turning in his yet-to-be-dug grave, but this is the new way for the Devils.
We’ll hold our criticism until the jerseys come out. If the NHL just makes a version of their Stadium Series jersey, the thing will sell out in minutes. Every wave of the black and red jersey was impossible to keep on the shelves. They’d be smart to keep it simple, even if they are going to have fun.
