New Jersey Devils might have a Jason Robertson trade deadline on their hands

The New Jersey Devils are looking to make a major upgrade to their top six, and one of their top options is RFA Jason Robertson. We now know when his contract situation will be solved one way or another with the Dallas Stars.

The New Jersey Devils have been linked to several star players this offseason. They tried to acquire Barrett Hayton through an offer sheet, but that failed. They’ve been tied to Dylan Larkin, Connor Hellebuyck, and Jordan Kyrou, but the player most Devils fans really want is Jason Robertson.

The Dallas Stars winger is looking for a massive new deal that pays him north of $12 million per season. If the Devils are going to move forward with Robertson as a target, they have to be ready to go $14 million per season, or possibly more. After paying Nico Hischier under $12 million this offseason, it might be a hard pill to swallow, but Robertson is definitely worth the money.

If Sunny Mehta were able to pull off the miracle of getting Robertson on the roster, it would immediately upgrade the Devils' roster a lot. Even if they lost some NHL players in the deal like Jonas Siegenthaler and Dawson Mercer, the Devils' ceiling would be raised by a few notches.

This automatically puts the Devils’ roster in the same conversation as the Carolina Hurricanes and Washington Capitals.

However, time is running out for the Devils to make a Jason Robertson trade work.

The Devils don’t have any restricted free agents left on the NHL roster. They re-signed Arseny Gritsyuk and traded Simon Nemec to the Calgary Flames. So, Sunny Mehta is not paying attention to the arbitration deadlines. That is, unless he’s looking at them for trade purposes.

There are a few interesting names going to arbitration this season. Trevor Zegras, Jamie Drysdale, and Braden Schneider are all names to watch in the Metropolitan Division, but Robertson is the biggest name and will get the biggest contract if they do go all the way to arbitration.

And this is when the Stars are likely looking for a resolution. If Stars GM Jim Nill is really trying to make a deal work, then we expect him to try and get it done before arbitration. We just learned that Robertson’s arbitration is Saturday, July 25th. Basically, teams have less than two weeks to give Nill their biggest and best offer while also getting Robertson to agree to contract terms.

For that reason, we think the Devils are likely out on Robertson this offseason. He’s too expensive, and the cost to acquire him will be cumbersome. Other teams will make the move because the Devils are still trying to add with analytics of all sides in mind.
