Luke Hughes
Team USA
Luke Hughes seems to be way down the list of American defensemen, as he was looked over for a replacement on the team for his teammate Brett Pesce. Hughes is young, and that is probably why he didn't make the team. He's just 21 years old. Right now, Brock Faber is the youngest player on the team, and he's a full year older than Hughes. And Faber is struggling, so that might impact their immediate decision. However, by the time Team USA is picking next year's team, they will have another partial season of Luke Hughes to watch, plus his impact on the Devils in the playoffs. That should be enough to convince them to add him to the team, giving all three Hughes brothers a chance to play together.
Simon Nemec
Team Slovakia
Simon Nemec was on the ice for Slovakia when they were earning a spot in the Olympics over the summer. He actually suffered an injury playing for his team, and it impacted the beginning of the Devils' season. He's fully healthy at this point, and it's the best we've seen him in a while. Nemec seems like a pretty easy bet to make the Slovak team as he was already there once. He may be young, in fact, he's younger than Hughes, but the Slovakian team isn't as stacked as the U.S. team is.
Tomas Tatar
Team Slovakia
Tomas Tatar is not nearly the player he used to be. He's been barely holding onto his spot in the lineup as he has struggled offensively this season. He might not be on the Devils next season, but he should be a lock to make the Slovakian Olympic team next season. There are currently seven active Slovakian NHL players. Tatar has 5x as many career points as the next-best player. Juraj Slafkovsky will be the star, but Tatar will be there in there as a savvy veteran.
