The New Jersey Devils have a very busy offseason coming up. They have to figure out what to do with every position. In goal, Jacob Markstrom is a problem, and they are locked in for two more years at $6 million per year. There is still a massive hole in the top six, even with the emergence of Connor Brown next to Jack Hughes and Jesper Bratt.Â
The most interesting issue is the one surrounding the defense. The Devils currently have seven defensemen on the roster. Six are signed long-term, and Simon Nemec is at the end of his entry-level contract. He’s a restricted free agent and obviously getting a qualifying offer. He’s been prevalent in trade talks for a while now, but trading him doesn’t really solve the Devils defensive problem.
See, the Devils have a zone exit problem, and they are just generally bad at moving the puck from the back end. That shouldn’t be the case with Luke Hughes and Dougie Hamilton joining Nemec on the unit, but the mixture with Brenden Dillon, Johnny Kovacevic, and Jonas Siegenthaler hasn’t meshed.Â
The two most prevalent trade targets are Nemec and Dougie Hamilton, which would make the Devils' issue even worse. They need to get better at the rush, but they’d lose two of their most offensively gifted defensemen. How could they replace that type of production?
What if we told you the Devils had an eighth defenseman that should be NHL ready?
Because of their roster situation, nobody is talking about Seamus Casey right now, but he should be close to ready to take the next step in his career. He left the University of Michigan in 2024 and has spent two seasons with the Devils’ organization. This past year was not a good one, as injuries really impacted his impact, but there was still growth.Â
He found ways to get his teammates the puck, both on the Devils and the Utica Comets.Â
Unfortunately, the injuries lingered and ended his season. That would make some worried that his future in the NHL is stalled.
The Devils are going to make some big changes on the defensive end. That’s not a prediction, it’s just understanding the math. If the Devils have faith in Casey, they can trade Hamilton, Nemec, and Kovacevic and survive. That would leave them with Luke Hughes, Brett Pesce, Jonas Siegenthaler, Brenden Dillon, and Casey, with an opening for a free agent addition. It would reset the Devils salary cap, or they could keep Hamilton after he was incredible at the end of the season.Â
Casey playing limited minutes alongside a veteran like Dillon could really help him grow on the NHL level while he adds offensive firepower.Â
He has to be healthy, and he has to be ready. They cannot take a big risk with this roster and go into the season with question marks. If Casey is a question mark, especially with the health, then he can’t be the answer. If he’s healthy and playing well, then the Devils might have an impromptu answer to their defensive problem that’s still on an entry-level contract.Â
