New Jersey Devils rival steals Jack Hughes's move after first-round series winner

Once upon a time, Jack Hughes did something that we've never seen a player do before, throwing his stick into the crowd after scoring the overtime winner. Now, one of the New Jersey Devils' biggest rivals stole his move.

The New Jersey Devils season has been over for a few weeks, and the team is forced to watch the Stanley Cup Playoffs from home. Well, some are watching from home. Jack Hughes has spent some time watching his brother Quinn Hughes play for the Minnesota Wild as Devils fans watch in horror. Devils fans looking for Brady Tkachuk to lose were a little happier.

There’s a lot happening with the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Sidney Crosby might be playing in his last playoffs, at least with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He helped drag his team from a 3-0 deficit to force a Game 6. The Penguins won two games in a row, but nobody was able to score.

Then, we got to overtime. Finally, a goalie let one through, and the Philadelphia Flyers sent their biggest rival home.

The goal was good enough, but it was the celebration by Cam York that has everyone talking. After he scored the game-winning and series-winning goal about 17 minutes into overtime, York skated across the ice and launched his stick into the crowd.

Where have we seen this before?

Ah, right. Jack Hughes did it first. It doesn’t feel like it, but this happened almost five years ago. After beating the Chicago Blackhawks in overtime with his second goal of the game, Hughes chucked a stick into the crowd.

Unlike York, he did it with grace and clearly thought about how that could go wrong. The stick went into the crowd softly and straight up. It was done about as safe as a stick toss could be.

Jack Hughes's stick toss will forever be copied, but there will never be another one like his

Meanwhile, York's toss was haphazard and reckless. We're not going to harp too much on his ability to toss a stick in the crowd after such an exciting moment for himself and the franchise, but swinging the stick like he was playing disc golf is insane.

At the end of the day, good for York on scoring the goal. We don't want to come off like sour grapes, but we also have to analyze the situation. It's clear who had the better stick toss into the crowd, even if the latest one comes from a much more important goal.
