The New Jersey Devils and New York Islanders made a surprising trade on Tuesday night, with Ondrej Palat and two draft picks going just a few miles away. Maxim Tsyplakov is heading to New Jersey, looking to bounce back after a terrible second season in the NHL.
Islanders fans reacted to the trade in a way Devils fans might expect. To say they weren’t thrilled would be an understatement.
The Islanders have acquired two sub-replacement level players in Palat and Soucy at $9.25 mil AAV. In exchange, they essentially get a 6th round pick and lose Tsyplakov. Don’t know what the hell is going on there.#Isles pic.twitter.com/VKE4D0EddU

This comes right after the Islanders and New York Rangers made a trade, with the former sending the latter a third-round pick for Carson Soucy. It's been an interesting few days for GM Matthew Darche and the third-place Islanders. They are clearly trying to make the playoffs in Darche's first year taking over for Lou Lamoriello, who was ironically in the Prudential Center on Tuesday for John MacLean's Ring of Honor ceremony.
Meanwhile, Islanders fans are interacting with Devils fans who are celebrating the move. Palat was becoming public enemy number one in New Jersey. It wasn't anything he did. He just didn't do what was expected of him in a red and black uniform.

Palat gets to go back to his traditional blue uniform where he saw his most success. Darche was with Palat in Tampa Bay when he helped them win two Stanley Cups. Could there still be some magic in that aging body of his?

- Sold Tsyplakov at his lowest point
- Got too little for taking on that bad contract of Palat
It’s not an apples to apples comparison, but 2.5 years ago we had to give up our 2026 second round pick to get rid of one year on Josh Bailey’s contract. Palat has another year… https://t.co/T5vu7Fl4Tl
Not everyone hates the trade. The price wasn't a ton for the Islanders. Well, the actual price was, since the Islanders are on the hook for $6 million for the next two seasons. The price to acquire was not. They gave up Maxim Tsyplakov and got back a third-round pick and a sixth-round pick.
At the end of the day, not everyone was hating the trade. Our friend Rob Taub, who does tend to love everything the Islanders do, was nice about the move.

I’m sorry, but if this is the deal, this is a fantastic trade for Darche https://t.co/4BUZLGfUUr

Interestingly enough, the Devils and Islanders are actually fighting for the same playoff spot. The Devils aren't doing as good a job since the Islanders are holding onto that spot.
There ya go. Palat and picks to #Isles from NJ.

Reaction: don’t love. I thought Darche would have done something more simple like Tsyp for a veteran and pick from a Western contender but he knows Palat and I don’t know squat.

At the end of the day, one side of the trade is universally celebrating, and the other side is split. Looks like this is a win for the New Jersey Devils.
