The governors are fighting. While we don’t want to get into politics, this one involves sports and it involves the passion that comes with being from New Jersey. Honestly, the argument between New York Governor Kathy Hochul and New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill is exactly why people from New Jersey have a chip on their shoulder.
To quickly go over the facts here, Governor Sherrill and NJ Transit are planning to put astronomical prices on the trains coming from New York into the Garden State for the World Cup Final. The event is expected to bring millions of people to the Tri-State area, even though most won’t have tickets to the game.
And that’s where the fight begins. New Jersey will likely miss out on much of the revenue from the World Cup Final because most tourism dollars will be spent in New York at events, restaurants, and small businesses.
People are traveling here from Europe and South America to check out the American Dream Mall. They want to check out Times Square and Broadway. Nobody is going to blame them, but at the same time, why not allow the state to profit off this massive crowd?
New York didn’t take too kindly to this, obviously because New Jersey is trying to disincentivize people from booking their hotel in New York. The Empire State is even trying to claim the World Cup, even though exactly zero World Cup games are being played across the state border. There are some games in Philadelphia, but nobody is picking a fight there.
And this fight is why the New Jersey Devils are so special. Governor Hochul’s office pulled the insults on our state, and they used a tried and true rib on the state. The Giants and Jets both play at the Meadowlands in MetLife Stadium, where the World Cup Final will be played, but neither claims New Jersey. They are both the “New York” Giants and Jets.
Ask the Jets and Giants what state they rep :) https://t.co/6gqtWft8CB

Of course, the Jets and Giants both predate their existence in New Jersey. At one point, they played at the Polo Grounds and Yankee Stadium. They also played in Shea Stadium for a season, meaning they are one of the only teams to ever call all three home in their existence. The Jets also played at the Polo Grounds and Shea Stadium.
However, the Giants have been here for 50 years. The Jets have been here for more than 40. It’s way past time we end the charade.
We know a team that has no problem with representing the Garden State. The New Jersey Devils are the only team that is proud of being a part of this state. The MLS team in New Jersey is the New York Red Bulls. The PWHL team, the Sirens, plays their games in the same arena as the Devils, yet they claim New York. At least the Riveters called themselves “Metropolitan” when they started playing in New Jersey.
We get it. People want the name value that comes with New York. New Jersey doesn’t need our name in lights. You’ll come here anyway. From the Jersey Shore to living with an actual yard, New Yorkers will come one way or another. Even if the train costs $150 per ride.
