NHL Insider has Quinn Hughes playing in New Jersey for the 2027-28 NHL Season

On the most recent episode of the Chris Johnston Show, host Julian McKenzie asked The Athletic reporter where Quinn Hughes will play in the 2027-28 NHL season. Johnston's response was that the eldest Hughes brother would play for the New Jersey Devils.

Johnston cites that there may be familial pressure to play in New Jersey with his other two brothers, Jack and Luke. Johnston also said that the opportunity to play with his brothers is "staring at him in the face," as he is less than a year away from joining his brothers in New Jersey.

Since last season ended, many NHL insiders have been suggesting that Quinn Hughes would extend in Minnesota for at least three years. Those same insiders said that he would sign the extension by the middle of July. Cale Makar extended in Colorado for a whopping $20.4 million per season. Many thought maybe Quinn was waiting for that shoe to drop before re-upping with Minnesota.

One insider's prediction is music to Devils fans' ears

It is now almost October, and there has been no extension. As time has gone on, the insiders and even the Wild themselves seem less confident that the eldest Hughes brother would sign the aforementioned deal. The verbiage has changed over time. Wild general manager Bill Guerin has gone from confident to beating around the bush when asked whether Hughes will sign.

This is the first time since Quinn Hughes' trade to Minnesota that someone as high-profile as Johnston has offered a destination other than the Wild.

Ironically, Johnston also said in the episode that he hates making predictions because someone always "radios" preseason takes and aggregates them. This is exactly what is happening.

However, in the same breath, the winds seemed to have definitely shifted in the Quinn Hughes saga. Whether or not the eldest brother comes to New Jersey or not, NHL fans will be happy that all the speculation is over whenever he decides.
