Back in 1990, the New Jersey Devils made one of the greatest decisions in the history of the franchise. They selected goaltender Martin Brodeur with the 20th overall pick in the first round of the NHL Draft.
He became a legend and is widely considered one of the greatest players in NHL history. He is the league’s all-time leader in games played, wins, and shutouts, among other things. Brodeur is a three-time Stanley Cup champion and a Vezina Trophy winner.
Due to his legendary status and importance to the franchise’s history, Martin Brodeur would be a significant figure no matter what. The fact that he has an essential job within the organization makes it even more apparent post-playing career.
Brodeur currently serves as the Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations. His role is to help the GM build the best team possible. He uses his knowledge to improve the organization. Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald has said how much he listens to the NHL's all-time wins leader.
The New Jersey Devils need Martin Brodeur to be around and succeeding
He isn’t a final decision-maker or anything, but his opinion is taken into consideration. A lot of smart moves have been made with him around. Going into 2024-25, Brodeur is the 13th most important person in the entire organization.
As a player, he probably would have been number one. However, he is still pretty high on the list for being an executive in a non-decision-making role. His presence is very important and always will be.
Brodeur isn’t going to directly impact what happens on the ice. However, he can influence it based on his insight and whether or not others listen to his opinions. It would also be hard for a player to come in and ignore anything that this legend has to say to them.
The goalies that come in can also use him for guidance. He knows what it takes to be elite in this league and he can be a great mentor. For all of those reasons, he is the 13th most important person in the organization.
