5 Potential PTO Options for the New Jersey Devils

For the most part, the New Jersey Devils have their roster set. However, there are some players out there that Tom Fitzgerald could bring in to compete for those last few spots during training camp through a professional tryout.

4. Kailer Yamamoto

Sticking with guys of a smaller stature, Kailer Yamamoto is another one of those. While injuries have plagued him the past few seasons, the thing to keep in mind is that he's still a young player at just 25 years of age. He plays somewhat of a scrappy game, but his offense is where it could be intriguing to New Jersey. Back in 2021-22, while playing with the Edmonton Oilers, the Spokane, Washington native notched 20 goals and 41 points. This while playing a middle-six role.

This could be similar to the Paul Cotter trade earlier, in which the Devils take a chance on Yamamoto's development. Again, he is still a fairly young player with several years of NHL experience already under his belt. If the Devils want to add a low-risk scorer to the bottom six, the young right winger might not be a bad option.

5. Max Pacioretty

The first reaction many will have with Max Pacioretty is one of wincing. That's because of the amount of bad injury luck that he's had over the past few years. That includes this past go around with the Washington Capitals where he only suited up in a total of 47 games. He finished with a disappointing mark of just four goals and 23 points. Despite all of that, in the right situation, at a lesser role, the 35-year-old could be a really good option as a PTO.

He had 95 shots on goal this past year which shows that even at this stage of his game, the guy isn't afraid to put the puck on the net. He was the second most efficient player when it came to 5-on-5 only behind future Hall of Famer Alex Ovechkin. While the lack of skill and durability is there, he could be a nice addition to the team's middle six to play on the wing of Erik Haula on a half checking, half scoring line.

The Devils do not have to look into the PTO market if they feel their farm system has guys ready to compete for an NHL roster spot. However, if Fitzgerald wants to have some more experience and competition in training camp, bringing in one or a few of these guys would not be a bad move at all.
