4. Mark Messier

Mark Messier was the ultimate captain, as evidenced by the league giving out an annual leadership award in his honor at the annual awards show. Messier was known for his almost perfect combination of toughness and skill. While in Edmonton, Messier won four Stanley Cups. He finished his career with 1,887 points in 1,756 games played — third on the all-time scoring list.

His career success was quite lengthy, spanning 25 years with the Oilers, New York Rangers, and the Vancouver Canucks. But, he never wore the signature Devils’ red. However, it almost happened.

3. Sidney Crosby

It’s hard to make this list without putting Sidney Crosby’s name on it. Especially when you consider his help in helping Canada earn a historic gold medal in the Olympics during the 2010 games. Seven minutes into overtime against the United States, Crosby exchanged passes with Jarome Iginla and shot the puck between the legs of American goaltender Ryan Miller for a memorable golden goal, delivering Canada the Olympic title. Crosby has also won three Stanley Cups and accumulated 1,596 points off of 1,272 games.

Hockey fans, including those a part of the Devils’ fandom, will always be left wondering what could have been had Crosby not been plagued with injuries while with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
