The New Jersey Devils completed Day 1 of their training camp on Thursday in Newark in preparation for this Sunday's opening preseason matchup against the New York Islanders. There were admitted jitters emanating from the walls in both Prudential Center and the RWJBarnabas Health Devils Hockey House. Every individual involved in this operation awaited with anticipation for Coach Sheldon Keefe’s opening whistle. From that point forward, the intensity commenced.

After the on-ice sessions were officially completed, the head coach and general manager held a press conference to discuss the commencement of the new season. One of the many questions asked of Coach Keefe related to the expectations for this Devils team moving forward and the vision for this new season. Keefe’s response was as follows:

"“The vision…is to be a group that builds something sustainable where we can compete in our division, in the playoffs, and ultimately competing for the Stanley Cup” "

That one answer contained strong words from a bench boss who prioritized increased energy, higher tempo, and quicker pace in every situation on the ice. This is only Day 1, and everyone involved knows this is the very beginning of a marathon. However, due to the upcoming global series, an unhurried start to training camp was not an option.

Keefe said it best at the press conference. Through a grounded structure, the goal is to build sustainability through the easy and difficult parts of a season. As Coach Keefe mentioned, everyone involved makes their living playing an imperfect game.

Mistakes are inherent in hockey, as Devils fans fathom them far too well. Recognizing this truth and building a system to counter those mistakes as best as possible is in the best interest of Coach Keefe, Tom Fitzgerald, and every player wearing a red, white, and black sweater. Anyone can have a good day. The question is, can that good day become a good routine? Is it sustainable? Day 1 is complete. The 2024-25 season has arrived.
