Jack Hughes comes into the 2026-27 season with plenty of motivation. Despite scoring the Golden Goal for Team USA at the Olympics and finishing last season playing at a high level, he and the Devils still missed the playoffs. Hughes also missed 21 games with two injuries. This included the infamous finger laceration at a Chicago restaurant in November 2025.
Now, he heads into this upcoming season looking to bounce back, step up, and get the Devils back into the Stanley Cup playoffs. There's a lot of back-and-forth about what kind of year Hughes will have. The hockey world knows that when he's healthy and on his game, he's a top-flight player in the National Hockey League. Hughes has only eclipsed both 30 and 40 goals in a season one time. That was in 2022-23 when he broke the franchise's all-time points-in-a-season record. Since then, he's put up just 27 goals in each of the last three seasons. On top of that, he's finished in the early-to-mid 70's in points during that span.
A lot of the reason for that lack of production comes from the fact that Hughes has had bad luck with the injury bug. He hasn't had a full, healthy season in four years, and many wonder if he'll ever play up to his full potential. I believe he will because of a few points.
Jack Hughes has plenty of motivation for a superstar season
The first is that Hughes has matured since his Olympic experience. This is not just in the way he handles himself with the media and the fans, but also in how he plays on the ice. He finished 25-26 strong with 15 goals and 36 assists. He was, without question, one of the best players in the entire league at that time. Jack will be motivated to carry that play into this season as well as lead the Devils to greater success.
The other point is having guys like Jesper Bratt, Connor Brown, and/or newly signed Anthony Mantha on his wings. All three have proven to not only be able to find guys and set them up to score, but also to have solid finishing ability. Mantha, in particular, could be a major boost for Hughes' stats after coming off a 30+goal season with the Pittsburgh Penguins last year.
Jack Hughes has a lot going for him heading into 26-27. He also has plenty to prove to himself, the Devils, and the entire league. Hughes plays better when he's motivated, and that will benefit everyone in New Jersey. The expectation with Hughes is that he's primed for the first 100+point season in his career and in franchise history.
