Tuesday morning, it was reported from The Athletic scribe Michael Russo that Quinn Hughes and his camp would be meeting with Minnesota Wild GM Bill Guerin this week to discuss the superstar defenseman's contract extension. He reported that Minnesota wants to go long-term with the deal, preferring a 5-8 year term.
The thing is, the timeline on Hughes' extension just does not make sense, and today's update almost reads like an ultimatum because of it.

From the time he was acquired by the Wild, the consensus opinion from major pundits and reporters seemed to be that a multi-year extension was an inevitability for the 26-year-old franchise-altering blueliner. Elliotte Friedman reported multiple times that he believed an agreement would be reached by the end of July. Russo noted multiple times that it seemed like a done deal. Guerin himself called re-signing Hughes his number-one priority.

Since then, it has been reported that there have been very limited conversations between the two sides, citing "busyness" from both Guerin and Pat Brisson, Hughes' agent. It has been reported that the Wild's pursuit of Dylan Larkin would be used as a "pitch" for keeping Hughes around. All the while, he and his brothers, who have spoken openly about playing on the same team together, have been running around New York City and New Jersey since the off-season began.
One would think that executing the "number one priority" would take precedence over signing fourth-liners to inflated contracts or communicating poorly with long-time veterans who would have been top-six staples. However, this report is the first concrete piece of information that the two sides are sitting down with each other -- I'm certain there has been a dialogue, but clearly nothing has been substantive.
It certainly reads, then, as though conversations are going to ramp up tremendously over the next little while. There is tremendous pressure for Hughes to sign -- not for the player himself, who has said that he is comfortable going into a season without a contract extension, but for the front office. Shelling out major capital and the future of the organization without a deal extending past this season would be a death sentence for Guerin, and the longer he goes without a deal, the more likely it is he ends up in New Jersey after (or during) this season. That holds especially true considering the disparity in off-season quality from both teams -- the Devils have improved throughout their roster while Minnesota has only gotten worse.
If the two sides talk frequently over the next month or so, which should be the expectation given the dialogues that have been reported, and there is no deal made, the writing very well may be on the wall for the eldest Hughes brother to join his siblings in New Jersey.
Guerin would be wise, then, to make a very compelling argument to the world-beating defenseman he shelled out three top prospects and a first-rounder for -- Sunny Mehta is waiting.
