Recently traded New Jersey Devils prospect suspended 10 games for abuse of officials

A former Utica Comets standout was traded at the NHL Trade Deadline as it was clear he didn't have a route to the NHL, but with his new team, he was just suspended for the rest of the season and beyond for what the AHL calls "abuse of officials."

The New Jersey Devils made a trade this past offseason, looking to utilize an asset they didn't have room for to get a former top prospect with upside that hadn't been met. They sent Graeme Clarke to the Minnesota Wild organization for Adam Beckman. Beckman had a decent season with the Utica Comets, putting up 33 points in 40 games.

Unfortunately for Beckman, he was behind a few players in the pecking order when it comes to NHL call up. The Devils were going to add Nolan Foote, Justin Dowling, and Brian Halonen to the roster before they added Beckman. So, they sent him to the Bridgeport Islanders in a deal that brought them defenseman Dennis Cholowski.

The Devils have already played Cholowski in the lineup due to the injuries facing the blue line, but with Seamus Casey taking a step forward and the prospects of Simon Nemec, his time with the Devils might be short-lived.

Adam Beckman suspended 10 games for "abuse of officials"

Meanwhile, Beckman is still in the AHL, playing for the Bridgeport Islanders. So far, he has seven points in 12 games, but it appears his season has ended early. No, he didn't get injured, but the AHL claims he abused an official, and he's facing a 10-game suspension.

"The American Hockey League’s Player Safety Committee today announced that Bridgeport Islanders forward Adam Beckman has been suspended for 10 games as a consequence of an incident in a game vs. Charlotte on Apr. 5. Beckman was suspended under the provisions of AHL Rule 40.3 for physical abuse of an official (Category II).

Beckman will miss Bridgeport’s final five games of the 2024-25 regular season, as well as the next five games for which he is active on an AHL club roster."
Statement from AHL

While it doesn't state the exact incident that caused the suspension, there was an incident last week where Beckman appears to check a referee. He seems to immediately check on the referee, but it could be a situation where the damage had been done, even if the intent wasn't there.

Beckman had a ton of potential, and he still might one day find a role in the NHL, but it's been a lot more disappointments than not over the past three years. We'll see if a team takes a chance on him this offseason knowing the suspension will continue into the regular season.
