The New Jersey Devils handed the Utah Hockey Club their first loss of the season. Although the game was sloppy and penalty-filled at the Prudential Center, the Devils picked up the pace during the second period and built up a two-goal advantage. Rookie defenseman Seamus Casey and center/captain Nico Hischier each posted two points, both having a goal and an assist. Hischier also logged five shots on goal.

The Devils scored their final goal of the night in the third period, sealing the final score to be a 3-0 win. Utah was coming off 6-5 OT win over the New York Rangers in their regular-season home opener.

"I think it was a very solid effort by us," Hischier said. "We knew they were hot, they were feeling good about themselves, so we knew we had to be ready. They got a lot of skill, a lot of speed, so I think we did a good job to eliminate that and stick with our game plan. If we play our hockey, we're a really good team."

Casey gave the Devils a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 1:14 of the second. He forced a turnover at Utah's blue line, took a pass from Hischier, skated down the slot, and shot the puck into the top right corner for his third goal of the season.

Hischier's goal put New Jersey ahead 3-0 at 10:13 of the third, also a power-play goal. No. 13 took a pass in the slot from superstar Jack Hughes and scored his second of the season on a snap shot.

Another standout for the Devils was goaltender Jake Allen. He earned his first shutout as a member of the New Jersey squad, posting 20 saves. He became the first goalie in NHL history with wins against all 33 different franchises.

It was his 25th shutout of his career, and first since February of 2023 while he was with the Montreal Canadiens.

The Devils are now 4-1 on the season so far. They transition to play on the road against the Carolina Hurricanes.
