Sergei Brylin gets another job after leaving the New Jersey Devils

Sergei Brylin was surprisingly left off Sheldon Keefe's new-look staff after three decades with the Devils franchise. After taking the head coaching job with Dinamo Minsk of the KHL, the New Jersey Devils legend was named head coach of another team.

The New Jersey Devils made a few interesting and shocking moves at the end of the season. When Sunny Mehta took over as GM, he started cleaning house. He began the changes by letting Dan MacKinnon and Chuck Fletcher go. Multiple other front office moves were made, but the next huge move was when Mehta and the Devils announced they would retain Sheldon Keefe as head coach.

However, they weren’t keeping everyone. After years of calls for him to lose his role, Dave Rogalski was let go as the Devils’ goalie coach. The Devils replaced the role with an entirely different view of goaltending development. We’re not surprised, after the Devils had 10 years of bad goaltending.

Beyond that, the biggest surprise wasn’t when Jeremy Colliton decided to take a job in the private sector; it was when the Devils announced that Sergei Brylin would no longer be a coach on Keefe’s staff. Brylin has essentially been a member of the Devils, from player to coach, both in the AHL and NHL, since 1994. Now, he was no longer going to be present.

And that took a bigger step forward when Brylin was announced as the new head coach for the KHL’s Dinamo Minsk. That much has been confirmed, but it appears Brylin isn’t done collecting head coaching jobs like Infinity Stones.

We see this a lot. Sometimes, guys who have been fighting for an opportunity see multiple opportunities come at once. Brylin went from a longtime Devils assistant with no NHL head-coaching interviews to now having two head-coaching jobs in Russia and Belarus.

There is some strife with the Belarusian team since they are still under the IIHF ban due to Russia’s war with Ukraine. The concern is how close Belarus is to Russia and the impact their position in these events would have.

Former Devils star Yegor Sharangovich will be held out of future events as one of the best players from Belarus until the IIHF lifts the ban, which was extended through the 2026-27 season. Brylin once coached Sharangovich when he was developing with the Binghamton Devils.

Brylin deserves all the flowers. He will remain one of the most beloved Devils players of all time. He was one of the few Devils players who own all three Stanley Cup rings, and that means something to this fanbase. We will continue to root for his success unless he starts to coach a rival.
