So Sunny's first trade may have brought in a lot of hope for the future. Sunny Mehta makes his first big move as Devils GM, by trading Simon Nemec to the Flames, and getting a big haul, including two first-round picks, which are Vegas 1st round pick in 2027, and Colorado’s 1st in 2028, which are both trade-protected. Some people might want Sunny to keep the picks, but most people want him to make a big trade that would greatly improve this team.Â
There are certainly some targets out there, and a lot of them could instantly improve the Devils’ roster with the amount of talent they have.
Right now, there is no bigger wait in the NHL right now than figuring out what Jason Robertson will do. The current speculation is that he will be traded and not be extended by Dallas, which seems to make sense. There will be many teams looking to acquire his talent, and now it depends on a couple of factors, especially for the Devils. If they do offer the two first-round picks, would it be enough for Nill to budge, and even if they do manage to get Robertson, will they be able to conjure up the cap space to pay him the $14 million contract he wants, because even though he was a 97-point player last year, that is a lot of the Devils cap space.
Another player who is being talked about and is waiting on his decision is Dylan Larkin, who now wants to leave Detroit due to his frustration. Larkin is still a very solid player at 29, and his speed remains the big highlight of his game. There are going to be teams looking to bring him in, and could it be possible that the Devils could be one of those teams? Well, there is a chance, and they could add the two firsts to get him, but the only thing that will ruin the deal, though, is Nico Hischier, as Detroit will want him, and could make him into a similar captain role, but could there be a way that Sunny could get Larkin without giving up Nico? Maybe it’s certainly possible, but it won’t be easy.
So this last player is pretty much a need for the Devils right now, and, like Larkin, he doesn’t appreciate the team he is on. Connor Hellebuyck has been playing out of his mind for the Jets for years, and this last season won a gold medal in the Olympics.
Unfortunately, he couldn’t have the same play he had in the Olympics with the Jets this season, going 23-23, but he did have a 2.86 GAA and a .895 save percentage, which is still very good and sounds like someone worth taking on a first-round pick for. There’s just one problem: Hellebuyck is now 33 years old. Granted, when the Devils traded for Jacob Markstrom, he was 35 and was much older, and they thought they were taking a big risk with him. Hellebuyck does seem like he would still be himself at 33, and he will still be the Hall of Fame goaltender teams will try to get. The Devils do have enough leverage to make it happen.
