The New Jersey Devils are officially focused on the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Facing off against the Carolina Hurricanes, the Devils' best hope is for their power play to continue scoring.

But there's another need for New Jersey; they must depend on the talent they have on their roster. And for the Devils, their offseason defensive addition who was a former member of the Hurricanes is going to make the biggest impact on the playoffs.

Brett Pesce

While the New Jersey Devils are obviously a playoff-worthy team this year, last year, they had quite a number of defensive lapses. This is why a six-year deal for Brett Pesce was made. Since being brought on board as a free agent in July of 2024, Pesce has significantly contributed to the New Jersey Devils as a reliable defenseman, known for his defensive play, puck control, and locker room presence. He has quickly adapted to the team, forming a strong bond with his young defensive partner, 21-year-old Luke Hughes. Pesce's contributions extend beyond the ice, with his leadership and positive attitude positively impacting the team's overall dynamic.

The advanced statistics back up Pesce being a positive impact on the team. In the Anaheim game, according to Natural Stat Trick, he and Hughes combined for a 17-3 shot attempts advantage, as well as being on the ice for seven shots on goal and zero against. Even the broadcasters are calling out moments where Pesce uses his stick to knock a puck out of the air and stop an opposing rush. He’s also good about separating players from the puck, clearing the crease, and getting the puck moving in the correct direction.

Previously for the Devils, there were struggles in all of those areas without him, and even greater struggles with those last season, which necessitated Pesce being brought in in the first place. The New York native currently sits with 17 points across three goals and 14 assists.

As Pesce has gained more time on ice, the Devils performed better. He's not the only reason, but his play is one of the main reasons why the Devils have outscored opposing teams 12-2 en route to the playoffs. We expect him to play an integral role in a possible Devils win, especially since he is playing the team he played for just last season.
