New Jersey Devils fans have a one-track mind in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. They are inherently interested in the future of Quinn Hughes. After the Minnesota Wild beat the Dallas Stars in the first round, it’s been a rough start against the Colorado Avalanche. Hughes and the Wild took their best shot in Game 1, and they still lost 9-6. Now, they are down 2-0 in the series.
It was all sunshine and fairytales for the Wild after Round 1, but now, the conversation has turned.Â
Quinn Hughes is up for an extension this offseason. Just last week, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reported that the second-best defenseman in the NHL was open to a three-year contract extension with the Wild. At least, that was his prediction. He’s one of the most connected people in hockey, so we must take his words seriously.Â
That is obviously a nightmare scenario for the Devils because it would line up the contracts of Jack and Quinn Hughes. While Luke Hughes is signed for one more year, that doesn’t make us comfortable with the scenario.Â
However, Greg Wyshynski asked Jack and Quinn Hughes’s agent Pat Brisson about this scenario, and he had an interesting answer when talking on Jeff Marek’s show, The Sheet.Â
Have there been conversations about Quinn & Jack Hughes becoming free agents together in 2030?

Their agent, Pat Brisson, spoke on the idea.

Pat Brisson had an interesting answer about Quinn Hughes's contract status and Jack Hughes's impact on his negotiations
Brisson was being coy there, but he was pretty open about how the brothers are talking about their future during the offseason. If the brothers are truly talking about their futures every summer, are they willing to wait another three years? And if that’s the case, would it really be three years?
There are a ton of variables here. Hughes could sign for three years, and either Jack or Quinn Hughes can try to push for a trade before either of their contracts end. Quinn Hughes could push for a trade this offseason or could just ride out the last year of his deal and walk to free agency.Â
Here’s the deal: if the Wild are this much worse than the Avalanche and they get swept, it’s basically the same as losing in the first round. They would have won as many second-round games as the Stars, so it would be a demoralizing situation. That could be exactly what Sunny Mehta needs to sneak in and make the move that should have been made in December, bringing Quinn Hughes to New Jersey.
