Tom Fitzgerald's most common trade partners and how it can tell us about the New Jersey Devils' offseason

The beginning of NHL Free Agency has been slower this year than in previous years due to other teams keeping their players before the opening of the signing period. Many insiders believe that the trade market will be the primary means by which most teams improve. Can we see who the Devils will deal with based off of Fitzgerald's previous trades?

Teams with One Trade

  • Anaheim Ducks
  • Carolina Hurricanes
  • Minnesota Wild
  • Seattle Kraken
  • St. Louis Blues
  • Tampa Bay Lightning
  • Toronto Maple Leafs
  • Vegas Golden Knights.

There are a total of eight teams that have made one trade with the Devils, with Fitzgerald as General Manager. Since there is only one trade per team, we can look at each one that was made.

Three of those teams made the list this past season. The Devils acquired Brian Dumoulin from Anaheim, Sprong from Seattle, and traded Graeme Clark to Minnesota for Adam Beckman. The trade with the Maple Leafs saw Joey Anderson sent to Toronto for Andreas Johnsson.

The two trades with the Lightning and Golden Knights were some of Fitzgerald's biggest. In one of Fitzgerald's earliest trades, he sent Blake Coleman to the Lightning for Nolan Foote and a first-round pick that became Shakir Mukhamadullin.

Much later, he sent former first round pick Alexander Holtz and playoff hero Akira Schmid to Vegas for Paul Cotter and a draft pick that became Mason Moe in this past draft.

The one trade with the Hurricanes, the Devils sent Sami Vatanen for Janne Kuokkanen, Freddy Claesson, and a third round pick that became Nico Daws. The Devils acquired Jon Gillies from the Blues for future considerations in a move that is nothing to write home about.
