Yesterday, the Florida Panthers shocked the hockey world by executing two significant trades, both of which centering around popular league-wide armchair-GM trade targets.

The first trade, a clear precursor to a bigger move, sent 23-year-old right winger Mackie Samoskevich to the Seattle Kraken in exchange for the 25th overall pick in the 2026 NHL Entry Draft and a conditional 2027 second-rounder, with the condition being that it is the higher of Seattle's picks. The Panthers subsequently flipped the 25th overall pick, as well as 9th overall, a first-rounder in 2029, and a second-rounder in 2030 to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for their captain, Brady Tkachuk, in what can only be assumed to be the biggest blockbuster of the off-season.

For the Panthers, this is an unsurprising sign that they're still all-in on this current core window despite missing the playoffs this past season. For the Devils, this eliminates not one, but two popular trade targets.

Tkachuk has been an ask from a loud portion of the fanbase for a number of seasons, especially from those pining for the Devils to add a bit of sandpaper to their current roster. Those unconcerned with that aspect of the game still wanted his services, simply because he's an excellent player. This certainly crosses him off the list for now and the foreseeable future, especially given that he is joining his brother. It should also be noted that, well, he was never interested in getting to New Jersey.

Samoskevich was a bit more under-the-radar as far as trade targets go, but those tuned into depth players or breakout candidates had him circled as a potential fit for either a trade or an offer sheet. It's for good reason, too, given his two-way aptitude, the fact that he produced well in sheltered, depth minutes, and the fact that he still has a lot of developmental runway. Of course, his price tag was unexpectedly cheap, so perhaps it is a good thing the Devils didn't spend that much in acquiring the youngster's talent.

Regardless, Florida's pair of trades yesterday crossed off two potential names in the trade market for New Jersey. It's a big season for ex-Panthers assistant GM Sunny Mehta and the Devils, so I'm sure that, even with the two candidates being goners, there will be plenty of turnover within the Devils' roster over the course of the off-season.
