In the age of acquiring assets, the New Jersey Devils had many paths to choose from with the overall number one selection in the 2017 Entry Draft. Thankfully, they made the right choice.

Nico or Nolan?

Nolan or Nico?

The Devils did the smart thing — just used the #1 selection for the best possible player. The simple and best approach bringing in a great player. It was the right choice.

I, for one, did not particularly care.  Either player would do.  What did I not want to see was any of the following scenarios…

  • I did not want to see the Devils trade down a la the Boston Celtics to acquire future assets.
  • I did not want to see the Devils move the pick for a few decent, yet unremarkable, NHL forwards.
  • I did not want to see the Devils make a surprise selection of a defenseman.

Some experts say Nico Hischier (or Nolan Patrick) are not generational players.  I don’t know how one actually knows that, but even if you do, I’m not overly concerned with that assessment. An NHL All-Star forward with great speed, vision and finishing ability potting 30 goals a season will suit me just fine. Selecting one of those two players was absolutely the right choice for the Devils.

Ray Shero kept it simple, and I’m fine with the path he chose.  Ever since the Devils lost Zach Parise and Ilya Kovalchuk, they’ve truly lacked top-end scoring talent.  Nico brings that capability to the table.  His speed, vision, passing ability, shot and NHL-sized frame all position him well for years of NHL success.  Also, his maturity and humility are impressive at his young age.

So, Mr. Shero, great job!  I will never question you on this decision, right or wrong down the road. Hischier is the healthier of the two with the higher ceiling.  He’s the right choice.

Now, on to the free agency! Let’s use some of that cap money on a great d-man from the Caps, please.  Just like the NHL Entry Draft, either one of those Washington standout defenders will suit me just fine.
