A New Jersey Devils fan asked the team how many retweets it would take to get season tickets. The fanbase responded in a big way.
We all know by now the viral sensation that was a kids quest to win a year’s worth of Wendy’s chicken nuggets. His #nuggsforcarter became the most retweeted tweet in the history of the social network. The New Jersey Devils tried their hand at their own viral sensation.
Obviously, since the Wendy’s post went viral many people decided to get in the game, but the creativity coming from the Devils social media folks puts them a step above.
The team gave Nick Donnelly one week to reach 9,450 retweets to win season tickets. That was the number that came from the addition of all their retired numbers multiplied by 35 for the number of years the team has existed, then multiplied again by the team’s three Stanley Cups.
Nick was able to beat that number easily, sitting at over 11,000 retweets just one day later.

Sure, the Devils just gave away season tickets for basically nothing, but the team would pay big for that kind of advertising. Using social media in such a way helps put Devils hockey on fans minds at a time when hockey is in a lull.
Obviously, a move like this doesn’t last, but it does build momentum. It definitely got people thinking about Devils hockey at a time when things are starting to ramp up. The team just came back from Buffalo, where the team’s best prospects took the ice for the Prospect’s Challenge. Training camp is starting Thursday. The hockey season is around the corner.
This campaign also helps fans forget that just last week the Devils used their resources to advertise to opposing fans. That was a terrible look, and something the team needed to move past quickly. This latest campaign helped, and all it cost them was a season ticket package the team wasn’t selling anyway.
