The New Jersey Devils played the Philadelphia Flyers Thursday night for the third time in less than a month. This time they finally came out with the victory. This looks to be the Devils’ biggest win of the season, and proves to me that they could be poised for a late season run to stay towards the top of the Metropolitan Division.

There are two reasons why the New Jersey Devils win against the Philadelphia Flyers was the biggest of the season thus far.

For one, they finally beat the Flyers. The past two games they played against the Flyers went similarly to this one throughout the first two periods. In the first meeting on January 13th, they went into the third period down 3-2 just like Thursday night. On January 20th, they went in trailing 3-1. Both of those games ended in a loss.

During Thursday night’s third period, the Devils looked like a completely different team. The Devils were able to come together and put forth a great effort to get the win in regulation.

This shows that the team is able to do it again. They went through a rough patch, but this game was much different. Going forward, this game looks like it can be a real confidence booster. A game that brings them back to how they played during the first half, when they were never out of any game.

Despite giving up their 2-1 lead to go down 3-2, this team was resilient. Team morale should be at a season high, especially since they were able to keep it from going to overtime and not allow their division foe to receive any points.

The second reason is that they were able to win a gritty, physical game. During the rough patch especially, that was the knock on this New Jersey Devils team. They couldn’t play tough. Physicality is still a bit of a weakness for them, but they showed that they can still win those chippy type of games against their rivals. Something they will need to do a lot in the coming months.

On Saturday comes another test against the Pittsburgh Penguins, the team that is directly behind them in the standings. I believe Thursday night’s game was the start of a good run going forward. Stringing three victories together Saturday will be a great sign. I expect them to be up for the task.
