New Jersey Devils goaltender Cory Schneider just listed his $2.9 million home for sale. Is this just a goalie trying to downsize in New Jersey, or does it mean something more?

For a cool $2.9 million, you can live the life of luxury. Enjoy 6,900 square feet in the glorious section of Short Hills, rub noses with New Jersey’s best, and enjoy some glorious extras like a humidity controlled wine cellar, a game room and a butler’s pantry. Oh, and you can live in New Jersey Devils goalie Cory Schneider’s former house, according to NJ.com.

WILD SPECULATION ALERT: This could just mean that Schneider is looking for something different in homes, maybe he hates his neighbors or wants a different neighborhood. It’s possible his kids are growing up and he wants something with a little more room (I know this house is huge, but it’s possible). Who knows, but it’s also possible that Schneider is preparing for life after the Devils.

Schneider has been up and down over the past two seasons, with signs of greatness like his run in the playoffs, and signs he lost it completely like two seasons ago. It’s hard to really put all your cards on Schneider right now.

The issue with this speculation is Schneider is recovering from hip surgery. He’s out until just about the day the season starts, and may miss the first week or two. Nobody is going to trade for a goalie with a question about his hip. If this injury lingers, he’ll definitely be the bad version of Schneider next year. Team’s aren’t going to take a shot on a $6 million goalie with an injury question.

This is definitely interesting. Until we get more information on Schneider’s next move, questions will remain. For example, if he moves to a townhouse that could tell you something more than him moving to another mansion.

Again, this is all speculation. Schneider’s home being for sale probably means nothing, but it’s hard to not realize where the Devils and Schneider are. He was benched for the final two months of the season. He was healthy enough to play, but he watched from the sidelines. Schneider wasn’t happy when he was forced to sit in Vancouver. Now that he’s the franchise player, it must feel worse.

For now, if you have an extra $2.9 million lying around, you can get a really cool house in a nice area.
