The New Jersey Devils have been rumored to have a third jersey on the way for quite sometime, but little has been said since then. Now, we’ve gotten our first clue that it’s going to happen.
The New Jersey Devils have never been one for alternate jerseys. The closest we came is the red and green jerseys the team wore for the Stadium Series back in 2014. However, the Devils were one of the teams listed on a leaked document that showed alternate jerseys from Adidas. It seemed legit, but we heard nothing from the team ever since. That is, until today.

It was subtle, but we all know what this means. This riddle shows that the Devils are getting an alternate jersey, and they’re adding a third color as well.
Now, the question becomes, what is that third color? There are really four options. One could be black, which would be a color the team already uses. There have been a lot of really good concepts for the black jersey, including this one from Backhanded Devil. There have been others that look really good as well. Black would have a really intimidating look to it.
Then there’s the obvious. Green has been a part of the Devils since the team started. Sure, they haven’t used it regularly since 1993, but fans will always have a special place for green. When you go to the Prudential Center for a Devils game, you see a lot of red and green throwbacks. Even some with current players on them. I still have my throwback Ilya Kovalchuk jersey. (I use it specifically for ugly Christmas sweater parties.) Green is a great choice for Adidas to use.
Now, the wild card. Red. Not the red they’re already using, no something between light red and maroon. A real deep red that will contrast really well with the current red. Obviously, this is the wild card for a reason. But a red on red ensemble could look really amazing.

There’s a small chance that gray could be the extra color. That wouldn’t look too bad, but I don’t think the team marketed it this way if they ended on gray.
When looking at all the colors possible, there really isn’t any other color that would work. Sure, a purple can work with Hockey Fights Cancer night or pink would work for a one off breast cancer awareness event, but full time? It doesn’t work at all. Don’t get me started on blue or orange. These are the only colors that matter.
Soon, we will see what the Devils third jersey will be. Hopefully, Adidas does the Devils fans right. Also, I really hope we don’t have to wait until 2019 before the jersey becomes available. If that’s the case, don’t tell us until then. It’s not worth it.
