A report out Sunday says that Martin Brodeur is leaving the St. Louis Blues to possibly make a return to the New Jersey Devils. If true, it’s great news for the organization.

The greatest player in the history of the New Jersey Devils is working for another organization. It’s always felt weird watching Martin Brodeur work for the St. Louis Blues. This whole Brodeur on the Blues thing has been weird since he signed with them to end his career back in 2014. Recent reports may show Brodeur’s time with the Blues may be over.

Multiple reports say that Brodeur is leaving his job as assistant GM in St. Louis. That includes Sportsnet and the Athletic.

Brodeur’s contract with the Blues ended in June, and reports say he wanted to scale back his role. Brodeur was considered for roles as some team’s general manager position, but it looks like he wants something less. Could that something less come from where it all started?

Brodeur has yet to make an announcement about where he was going, but reports say that a return to the Devils is the favorite. He could also go to his hometown of Montreal and work in the Canadiens front office. He could also reunite with Lou Lamoriello and work for the New York Islanders.

More from Pucks and Pitchforks

Brodeur has done really well with the goalie talent in St. Louis. For that reason alone, the Devils should bring him back in a front office capacity. The Devils have a very good goalie coach in Rollie Melanson, but having Brodeur also in the fold is even better. With the Devils having trouble drafting and developing the goalie of the future, Ray Shero could really use his insight.

The Devils could probably pay Brodeur what he was making in St. Louis for a lesser role. Just having Brodeur at half the home games will bring more fans into the arena. Having Brodeur around for every special night and available for pictures for fans will make the team extra money.

This should have happened the second Brodeur retired. It was one thing to watch him put on another uniform. The Devils didn’t really have a choice in that matter. On the other hand, the Devils should have immediately given him a front-office job. Now, it’s time to make it right.
