New Jersey Devils prospect Cam Johnson was disappointing in his first full season in Binghamton. It may be the last time we see him wear a Devils jersey.
The New Jersey Devils announced the signing of goalie prospect Gilles Senn to a two-year entry-level deal. This is one of the many goalie prospects the Devils have in their system now coming to North America to play his hockey under Ray Shero and company’s direct watch. This is a good move, but does it mark the end to another prospect’s time with New Jersey?
It seems there may no longer be room for Cam Johnson after the Devils make the Senn signing official. Johnson is a restricted free agent, and with Evan Cormier signing his own entry-level deal during this season, there’s nowhere to really put Johnson.
Johnson wasn’t great this season, however we expected some speed bumps. These speed bumps were bigger than we hoped. In 29 games with Binghamton, Johnson had an .872 save percentage. It didn’t help that he had a revolving door of defensemen in front of him, but at the end of the day you have to stop the shots.
Johnson was one of the major problems on Binghamton this season, but hardly the only problem. The biggest problem with the B-Devs was an ever changing lineup. Just look at the goalie position. They have seven other players there over the season, including Eddie Lack, Cory Schneider and Mackenzie Blackwood.

Johnson never really had a chance, but he also didn’t really do well when he was in net. He allowed too many soft goals, and his confidence waivered. I was ready to give him another chance, but it appears the Devils aren’t in the same boat.
Johnson looked like he could one day be the top goalie prospect in the system. After signing at the end of his college season with the University of North Dakota, it looked like an underrated move by Shero. Now, it looks like a short-term move to fill the goalie position for an injury-plagued season.
Johnson will find a spot elsewhere. The Devils have a small chance of keeping him and possibly playing him in the ECHL until someone gets injured, but the Devils might look for a veteran to play in the AHL in case either Cory Schneider or Mackenzie Blackwood deals with an injury. Johnson just didn’t come to play this season like we hoped he would. And now, it looks like his time here is over.
