After several years of New Jersey Devils fans getting to listen to New Jersey band Gaslight Anthem’s “Howl” as the team’s goal song, now the team is holding an election for a new song. For years, the New Jersey Devils used Rock and Roll part II, but because of the despicable acts by Gary Glitter, the Devils smartly stopped using his music so he couldn’t profit off them. The New Jersey Devils recently posted a few days back a “goal song fan vote” on the NJ Devils website.

There is so much rich history for New Jersey Devils fans and expats alike that connects the New Jersey hockey and music scene. From a plethora of artists and bands to select from here are 5 ideal bands that could have fans nominate a goal song from a NJ band.

Gaslight Anthem

Gaslight Anthem is a New Brunswick, New Jersey based band that has been very fortunate to have had “Howl” airing after every Devils goal the past few seasons at the Prudential Center. One of the things fans will notice is that the Devils only made the playoffs once while this song was used. There are Devils fans that want to keep this super jovial jam going.

There has been a plethora of great moments from Nico Hischier scoring his first points to Taylor Hall winning the Hart Trophy in the 2017-2018 season, and getting the New Jersey Devils to their first playoffs since 2012. Even in the past few seasons, fans have warmed up to Gaslight Anthem opening up the door to more local bands. This kind of New Jersey pride has been getting untapped since the “One Jersey” campaign.

If fans had to vote on a song for the Devils goal song it should stay “Howl”. “Howl” is such a lively jam that people can’t stop playing it online. Gaslight Anthem has done an amazing job repping the state of New Jersey in their music videos, and it’s amazing to play Howl even when the team is away and pretend it is a home goal. Honestly, this would be an amazing jam for Jack Hughes‘ first NHL goal. One of the things Gaslight Anthem should do is come up with a customized song called “Rock The Rock!”

Bouncing Souls

The next New Jersey band is the Bouncing Souls. This is a very familiar New Jersey band that plays a very well known jam that has been played at Montreal Canadiens games at the Bell Centre. Bouncing Souls at one point in 2007-2008 inaugural season at the Prudential Center played “Ole.” Honestly, hearing Ole being blasted in between face-offs at Devils games last season really was a solid pick.

For those of you who are wondering the origins of the Bouncing Souls, they are from New Brunswick, New Jersey. A lot of people are beginning to embrace “Ole” versus 12 years back. This song made a big comeback since then with the help of the smart phone and social media. Having listened to this song, it is very catchy and it is very inclusive to a lot of the “family-friendly” attitude of a young and growing 3rd generation of Devils fans.

One of the things that should be taken into consideration if the Bouncing Souls do win in the fan vote contest, the criteria for the new goal song needs to be “lively, family friendly, unites the fanbase, and displays a lot of New Jersey state pride.” Having these expectations kind of like how the Dallas Stars did when they got Pantera to customize a goal song for them. In this case it would be wicked awesome to having a song like “True Believers” would be an excellent choice to succeed Howl by Gaslight Anthem.

Palisades

There is a band from Iselin, New Jersey called Palisades. Palisades is a very heavy metal rock band that has the New Jersey style of what Volbeat from Denmark brings. One of the variables Devils fans should listen in is their jam called “War.” It’s short, it’s indeed heavy, and this has an element of head banger music. For those who love to rock out to a song similar to Winnipeg Jets old goal song “Hell Yeah” by Rev Theory.

Anytime you go to a Devils game before the game and in warmups, it is very common to have heavy metal band music going through the loud speakers. However, in this part of the equation for a goal song it would be very intimidating to hear a metal band in the background after the Devils goal horn finishes up. If Devils game day operations gets their hands on a band like Palisades, there should be a jam like “Vendetta” that has fantastic mixes of a powerful singing voice, drums, and guitars all perfectly mixed in.

Over the decade, Devils fans are accustomed to Motorhead, Van Halen, Metallica, Volbeat, SlipKnot, and many other heavy metal bands that the theme is becoming a trend. With Iselin, NJ not far from The Prudential Center it would be a tremendous honor for Palisades’ song to be nominated. It wouldn’t be a bad choice for The Devils fans and the team to summon the power of Palisades’ music. The energy, excitement, and the delivery of Palisades’ songs can make the 2019-2020 New Jersey Devils a very intimidating team to play at The Rock.

Bruce Springsteen is one of, if not thee most iconic names in New Jersey music history and a Central Jersey guy from Freehold. There are so many great jams that Devils fans already party to from “Glory Days” “Born To Run” and “Born In The USA.” It makes a lot of sense that fans of all ages love “The Boss.” If Bruce Springsteen himself recorded a very special song to Devils fans and the team it would be amazing.

What would make it amazing is that Springsteen sings a lot about his native New Jersey to begin with, so state pride is already established. His band the E Street Band knows how to surround him with amazing music just like how Martin Brodeur was surrounded by Scott Stevens, Ken Daneyko, and Scott Niedermayer on defense. To be perfectly clear, anyone who listens to Springsteen’s music would be glad to have a song that could have potential to be a good replacement if Gaslight Anthems’ “Howl” is indeed succeeded.

Over the years, as Devils fans we know if you recall the Montreal Canadiens had a local band named Loco Locass that played a song called “Le But” (the goal in French) that was one of the main stays for quite awhile in the Bell Centre. One of the things that was unique in that jam was it had a mix of Quebecois-French, and the love for the Montreal Canadiens. If Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band come up with a song it is definitely gonna be customized to fit all things New Jersey

Our last band is called Saves The Day. This marvelous band is from Princeton, New Jersey. They have a lot of great choices for a goal song the Devils fans should consider. The band knows how to display state pride, they’re not too heavy rock but the right rhythm between the guitarists, drummers, and the vocalists. This band has been very well established and have performances at venues like Asbury Lanes not far from The Stone Pony.

If today were the last day Devils fans had to do an open vote for a New Jersey based band that has a lot of great tunes. This team is a great sleeper pick, and a safe bet that is very likely a band that could unseat Gaslight Anthem for the new goal song. However there is so much greatness, talent, and depth in this article it almost feels like we are talking about this years 2019-2020 New Jersey Devils roster.

What would it take to have Devils fans to amend Howl by Gaslight Anthem? Well to put this into perspective the vocals, and the band behind Saves The Day actually has a lot of great things going for them. If Devils President and Game Day Operations, Hugh Weber took notes from what the Dallas Stars did with a custom song from Pantera, the same can be done with Saves The Day.

A ton of potential has been untapped with what Devils fans did by choosing Howl in the past. However, Saves The Day can partner up with the New Jersey Devils and possibly create their version of a New Jersey Devils goal song. A goal song that would bring excitement, team pride, and the energy from the stands in unity.
