Jeff Carter Trade

This one actually feels really close to what the Devils are going to look to do. The Columbus Blue Jackets traded for Jeff Carter thinking their window was closer than they thought. Then, 2011-12 season went to hell, and it was clear that Carter was not going to fit in with their long-term plan. Looking for a reset, the Jackets traded Carter to the Los Angeles Kings for prized defensive prospect Jack Johnson and a 1st-round pick.

Johnson was originally taken with the third-overall pick in the 2005 NHL Draft by the Carolina Hurricanes. After refusing to sign with the Canes, he was traded to the Los Angeles Kings. After parts of six seasons with the Kings, he was sent to the Jackets to upgrade their blue line. He was also sent with that coveted 1st rounder.

The Devils are looking to get a future top-line defensive prospect, whether that’s one that is NHL ready this season, or a younger one that will be ready by next season. Also, there has to be a 1st-round pick involved in the deal.

Hall is a better player than Carter was, but Carter had 10 years left on his current deal paying him $5.272 million per season. Hall, on the other hand, is only signed this season. That’s why the difference between the two deals is getting a proven young NHL defenseman and getting a prospect who likely hasn’t played in the NHL yet.

We also think Hall is going to get more pieces in the deal. There are rumors that Ray Shero is looking to get four pieces. This one got the Blue Jackets two major pieces.
