Mirco Mueller

Mirco Mueller’s time with the New Jersey Devils started with Ray Shero giving up a surprising amount for a former 1st-round pick. The San Jose Sharks sent Mueller and a 5th-round pick to the Devils in the 2017 offseason for a 2nd-round pick and a 4th-round pick. With that 2nd-round pick, the Sharks selected defenseman Mario Ferrero, who’s already a regular in the NHL and probably better than Mueller.

This goes down as the worst trade of the Ray Shero era. Not only was Mueller not what the Devils expected, but because of what the Devils gave up they continued to give Mueller a chance to prove himself.

We have to give credit where credit is due. Mueller was the only player this season that seemed to be a good fit with P.K. Subban. For that reason alone, the Devils could bring him back, but there’s no way the Devils go into next season with Mueller penciled in on the top line, right?

Mueller only signed a one-year deal last offseason, so the Devils have the right to re-sign him as he’s a restricted free agent. However, if they don’t offer him a qualifying offer, then he will be free to sign with whoever he wants. That’s the option we see happening, as the person who was keeping Mueller around is no longer in the building.
