Trade One

This might be something that the Devils consider, but the question is whether or not the Sabres would consider doing it. The Sabres would be getting a big haul with 2020 first and 2021 third-round picks, Reilly Walsh, and Ty Smith. However, Jack Eichel is so good that it makes you wonder whether or not a specific package would be good enough.

The fact that Eichel has made public comments against the Sabres might make it difficult for Buffalo to get exactly what he is worth. You might also remember that the Devils got Taylor Hall from the Edmonton Oilers for Adam Larsson in a one-for-one deal. That is because the Edmonton Oilers were a poorly-run franchise at the time, but then you have to remember that the Buffalo Sabres aren’t much better.

Reilly Walsh is going back to Harvard for his senior year, so that is a bit scary on the side of the Devils. He will be free to sign with any team in the league if he chooses to not sign with whoever has his NHL rights by the end of next season. As for Ty Smith, he is New Jersey’s top prospect and would be one of the key pieces of this trade. Smith has been sent down to his junior team two years in a row now but should be ready to jump to the NHL after this year.

If the Sabres were able to sign Walsh, add Smith, and a couple of picks,  it might be worth it if Eichel truly wants out. They might want more to move him but this certainly would be a start.
