Tyson Barrie

Tyson Barrie is not our favorite defenseman on the market this season, but we can’t ignore his talent. He ended up leaving Game 5 of the Maple Leafs-Blue Jackets series with injury. Like many free agents coming into this offseason, Barrie saw his value plummet this season, and he will likely have to choose between taking a short-term deal at a high value or going for a long-term deal now with less AAV.

If he’s willing to take a short-term deal, the Devils should be willing to pay the man. Barrie has been at times one of the best offensive defensemen in his conference. It definitely didn’t work out that way this season, after seeing his points drop from 59 to 39. The Maple Leafs just seemed like a bad fit from day one. He ended up getting shut out of points completely in the Blue Jackets series.

It’s not a huge need for the Devils to have a scoring right-handed defenseman. They already have P.K. Subban and Damon Severson, on top of Will Butcher on the left side and Ty Smith looking to a place to call home. There’s only so much power play time to go around. This isn’t our favorite move, but when looking at all of the possibilities in terms of Maple Leafs players, the Devils always have to consider the talented defenseman. If Barrie is willing to come to New Jersey, the Devils should consider it. However, we believe he’s likely going to get better offers from teams closer to contention that he will take.
