Trade 1

The New Jersey Devils would absolutely need to give up a lot to acquire Marner. He is an elite scorer which makes a trade like this a blockbuster no matter what. This trade here of Marner for Ty Smith, the Arizona 1st-round pick, and Pavel Zacha is a lot to give up for the Devils but it is probably worth it. Marner would go straight to a line with Hischier (or Hughes) and make an immediate impact. He makes a lot of money, but the Devils could afford it. His cap hit also might be why the Devils wouldn’t need to kick in even more.

Ty Smith has failed to make the team two years in a row. He went back to the Spokane Chiefs and dominated both times. He is now a question mark because you have to wonder what it was that kept him out for the 2019-20 season. We thought he had a chance to make it in 2018-19, so he looked to be a lock this past year. Well, maybe 2020-21 would be the year but if the Leafs wanted him for Marner, you have to consider it.

The 1st-round pick that New Jersey got for Taylor Hall is going to get them a really nice player if they keep it. The Leafs might be willing to go for another mid-round pick in this draft so they can develop someone who will eventually be a cost-controlled player. As for Zacha, he would be perfect on a team like Toronto who is so deep at forward. He would be able to help them in areas that they need help in. He isn’t an offensive superstar, but he might be able to help them do the little things in a more suitable role.
