Is Johnny Gaudreau An Option for the New Jersey Devils to go after?

The New Jersey Devils are a team that needs help in a lot of areas. A good winger to help out their two young star centers, Nico Hischier and Jack Hughes, would go a long long way. Johnny Gaudreau‘s name has been thrown around a lot lately. The rumors are going crazy right now for him and it feels like the Devils will always be connected to him simply because he is from New Jersey. He would be an awesome addition to the Devils if they were to pull something like that off.

The Flames had a pretty ugly exit from the playoffs at the hands of the Dallas Stars. They looked pretty good against a beat-up Winnipeg Jets team but fell off against the Stars. Calgary had a 2-1 series lead at one point but they were never able to close it out. They were also up 3-0 in game six and looked like they were going to cruise to a game seven. They blew it and ended up getting routed in the end. They have a lot of problems and need to address them quickly.

They might need to make a big change to their lineup and the Devils should take advantage. Johnny Gaudreau has two years left on his deal so it probably wouldn’t take that much to get him over. The Devils would still have to give up some assets because Gaudreau is a very good player but the risk of losing him in two years is there.

Gaudreau can be a game-changing offensive player. He has 151 goals and 294 assists for 445 points in 464 games. He is also a +19 as a scoring winger and has a 51.3 percent CorsiFor. This is a player that has a positive impact on all of the teams he has ever played on and at 27 years old, has a lot left in the tank. The Devils would be very wise to go for him if he becomes available.

If the Flames do make it known that he is available, there are going to be a few teams that line up for him. There are, however, few teams with a need for a guy like him with the cap space to do it. According to CapFriendly, there is no team in the National Hockey League that spends less on their salary right now than the New Jersey Devils. They are in a great spot with their cap and adding Gaudreau would do wonders for them.
