This trade is the type of asking price the Devils are going to see. It’s the team’s best defenseman, a very high pick in a good draft, plus a little more. Damon Severson has a bad year but so did the whole team and he is a prime candidate for a bounceback season. It would be hard to lose him, but to get a legit scorer like Laine this is the price you have to pay.

For Winnipeg, they would solidify that defense taking some of the workload off there fantastic goaltender. Connor Hellebuyck can move the puck up to there many talented forwards making them all better. The pick this year will give them a shot at another good player for cheap for a few years or another piece they can move for a talented defender or whatever they feel they need going forward. This could even be a piece used to trade for a major player at a future trade deadline if the team becomes a true contender.

From the Devils side, we would be struggling even more on defense and need to pick up a free agent, or three, just to fill the gap this year but moving forward the forward core is built and finished.
