6th Round, 161st Overall

Devils select Oskar Magnusson, LW, Malmo Redhawks

This is the only other time our pick lines up with Corey Pronman’s pick after the Raymond and Schneider picks in the 1st round. It would be a dream if a player like Oskar Magnusson falls to the Devils at 161st overall. His biggest skill is his vision on the ice. He’s on the smaller side (5’10 165 lbs.), but he’s elusive while skating.

Speaking of skating, it leaves something to be desired. He just lacks the high end speed that would put him much higher in the draft, but that’s not going to stop him from being a really good player. He has an energy that allows him to play a 200-foot game that will get teams excited. A winger that can play defense this well comes down to hockey IQ and pure effort.

Magnusson is already starting his season in the SHL with the Malmo Redhawks. It gives the Devils one more chance to see him play. Last year, he only played four games with the adult team. This year, he’s already halfway there. He had 48 points in 38 games last season with the team’s under 20 team.

Some projections have Magnusson going in the 3rd round, but here he falls to the 6th round and the Devils can’t help but grab him here. Magnusson is able to score in many different ways, which makes him deceptive on the ice. He has to work on his skating so he can get to those high-danger areas on the next level, but once he’s there he has a high-percentage chance to score.
