Regrading Every New Jersey Devils Pick In 2019 NHL Draft
By Nick Villano
3rd round, 70th overall
Daniil Misyul, D, Lokomotiv Yaroslavl
New Grade: B
Right now, Daniil Misyul is the better Devils’ defensive prospect. He played really well last season in Russia, and this season he’s already played six games in the KHL as a 19 year old. It’s looking like he’s developing into a very good defensive prospect.
Misyul has a lot of tools that should be intriguing to the Devils over the long haul. He stands at 6’3, and does things a lot of tall defensemen can’t. He can join the rush and add to the offensive game while also keep his defense top of mind. It’s rare that he leaves his goaltender hanging.
Misyul’s skating might set him apart from the other Devils defensive prospects. The Devils are going to be facing a dilemma in a year or two when there are multiple young defenders ready to play in the NHL. Luckily, the Devils can let Misyul develop in the second best league in the world. Misyul has the look of a really good player, and if he’s on the Devils in three years, it’s because he started playing out of his mind in the KHL. He seems to be a little bit of an afterthought overall, but Misyul might be holding down a second-line role on the Devils for a decade sooner rather than later.
Misyul could end up being one of the best values in the 2019 NHL Draft. He has some serious upside along with a decent floor for a teenage defenseman.
