Uniting Jack Hughes With One Of His Brothers

Is this a veiled slap at Vancouver Canucks fans saying they could get Jack Hughes for Olli Juolevi and the 10th-overall pick? Are we that petty? Yes.

Although, it doesn’t have to be Quinn Hughes, in the past we’ve seen highly-skilled brothers force their way on the same teams. Eric and Jordan Staal both played together for the Carolina Hurricanes. The Sedin twins spent their entire careers with the Canucks organization. Going way back, there’s Bobby and Dennis Hull winning games for the Chicago Blackhawks. Then, there’s the brother combination that broke Devils’ fans’ hearts. Scott Niedermayer left the Devils, the only organization he knew at the time, to go win a Stanley Cup with his brother Rob in Anaheim.

The Devils will get the fruits of this situation thanks to Jack Hughes. He’s going to want to play with a brother at some point. The family seems very close. Obviously, Luke Hughes has not made it to the NHL yet, as he’s draft eligible for the first time this season. Quinn is a star in Vancouver. This will be a difficult endeavor, but 10 years is a long time to change fortunes.

The Devils will be looking to get a new contract done with Hughes after the 2021 season. They will sign him for the full eight-year max extension. He will get an overpayment at first, but thanks to his rookie year falling below expectations, it’s going to end up being one of the better contracts in the league.

Meanwhile, Quinn signs a six-year extension with Vancouver. Four years into the deal, things start to sour in Vancouver. They continue to sign free agents they should avoid altogether. The core is still great, but the complementary pieces keep leaving in free agency. With two years left on his deal, and a salary cap situation from hell, the Canucks explore trading their 26-year-old defenseman. Jack goes into Fitzgerald’s office and bangs on the desk for him to get his brother.

This is, of course, if the Devils don’t just draft Luke this season. Either way, there will be a Hughes brothers’ connection in New Jersey on opening night 2030.
