When Jack Hughes buried the overtime winner against Canada at the 2026 Milan Cortina Games, the moment instantly became the biggest goal in a generation of American hockey. The Golden Goal. Because of Hughes’s heroics, the U.S. men's Olympic team won gold for the first time since the 1980 "Miracle on Ice," landing 46 years after that original upset.
The win came just days after Hughes’s mother, Ellen Hughes, won her own gold medal as a member of the women’s team coaching staff. It was the first time ever that both the men’s and the women’s team took gold home back to the United States. And that moment turned Jack Hughes into the biggest star in the NHL.
He was everywhere after that goal. Saturday Night Live. The Pat McAfee Show. The Tonight Show. The World Cup Final. The State of the Union Address. The Morgan Wallen concert walkout. Whether with his teammates, with his brother, or flying solo, Hughes was a made man because of the Golden Goal.
In the weeks after he scored that overtime goal, a lot of fuss was made about the merchandise and memorabilia that came with it. For one, the Hockey Hall of Fame took the puck, which Hughes was not too happy about. It especially didn’t make sense since the Hall of Fame is in Toronto, hope to the silver medalists, but we digress.
And now, he could go into the record books for something that’s historically been held by Wayne Gretzky.

Topps revealed that the 1/1 hockey card with the inscription "Golden Goal 2/22/26 Go USA!" It was part of a massive launch of cards where everyone paid the same price for their cards, but most of them were common cards. Some had different photos from the night, but there was only a few with a signature at all, and this is the only one that has this inscription.

The Devils star is already in rarefied air when it comes to a card of this magnitude. Fanatics Collect is currently auctioning the card, and as of this writing, it’s already at $42,000 at the time of this writing. There have already been 18 bids. That's already an extremely high price, and the card still has 14 days left before this is all said and done. This price is nowhere near done rising.
A single Jack Hughes card fetching five figures says something about how far modern hockey memorabilia has come, but it's still a long way from the ceiling of hockey cards. The bar remains a 1979-80 O-Pee-Chee Wayne Gretzky rookie card, graded a Gem Mint 10 by PSA, That sold in a private sale in 2021 for $3.75 million.
That same card had already rewritten the record book once before, when a different Gem Mint 10 copy sold for $1.29 million at a Heritage Auctions sale in late 2020. Those are the only two Gem Mint rookie cards for Wayne Gretzky in existence, thus why we’ve seen these incredible prices for the card.
Will Hughes’s care reach even close to those heights? The extreme rise in the price so far tells us we’re looking at a six-figure card on our hands. Getting close to the record seems unlikely, but rarity is worth its weight in gold nowadays. This being the only card like it might push this auction to an uncomfortable level. Gretzky’s record might be in jeopardy.
