We're firmly entrenched in the 2026-27 campaign, with most teams having played roughly an eighth or more of their seasons to date. For one player in particular, as each month comes to a close without a contract extension, a deadline for the decision seems more and more in sight.
That player is none other than Quinn Hughes of the Minnesota Wild.
Before the off-season even began, rumors suggested the eldest Hughes brother would sign a multi-year extension to stay with the Wild. As the off-season progressed, those talks never died down, even though the 27-year-old defenseman never mentioned his intentions. Yet no extension came, and evidence began to mount against the notion that he was ready to make that move.
The situation with Quinn Hughes will remain confusing
Since the beginning of the season, the general consensus has been that Q. Hughes is entirely undecided. On one hand, the Wild are a legitimately good team; he has a good relationship with Wild GM Bill Guerin, and he has the likes of Kirill Kaprizov, Matt Boldy, Brock Faber, and Jesper Wallstedt by his side. On the other hand, both of his brothers are in New Jersey, as is his good friend Connor Hellebuyck, and the Devils themselves are becoming a bit of a wagon. It makes sense as to why he's undecided -- waiting out the season and seeing where both teams are at would be the prudent thing to do if his goal is to also win a Stanley Cup.
The problem for the Wild is that, well, talks have stalled altogether. According to Guerin himself, who spoke on the radio Wednesday afternoon, there have been no recent talks between the two sides. Concerningly (for the Wild), he also had the following to say, when prompted about the hypothetical in which Hughes does not come to a decision in due time:
"I haven't really decided, at some point in time I'll have to try to figure things out and see what’s best for the team. I know one thing’s for sure: having Quinn on our team is what’s best for the team. And, you know, I don't know. I’ll be completely honest with you, I don’t know. I don't know what’s going to happen. I don't know what I’m going to do."Bill Guerin
Elsewhere in the interview, Guerin also said the following:
"There’s nothing to talk about right now. What am I going to do, say, ‘Please, please, please?'"Bill Guerin
Neither one of those quotes is particularly hope-inspiring for the Minnesota fanbase or team. For a GM to admit he not only doesn't know what his star player is thinking but to subsequently say that he has no plan yet if he doesn't extend is antithetical to the position he holds. Every day Hughes remains unextended is a day closer to the Wild being forced into a decision their GM is seemingly unprepared for.
The fact is, if he wanted to re-sign, it would have been done by now. The clock is still ticking.
