Two New Jersey Devils legends can be inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame this year as sporting icons, but it isn't up to them to make that decision. Actually, it's up to you.
On Wednesday, the Devils announced that superstar forward Jack Hughes, as well as Devils founder and owner Dr. John J. McMullen, can be honored by the state as members of the 2026 class, following in the footsteps of the best goalie in NHL history, their very own Martin Brodeur, who was inducted last year.
According to the Devils' press release, "the New Jersey Hall of Fame honors citizens who demonstrate an unwavering commitment to excellence and resilience—a standard both of these nominees have set in their respective eras.
"Fans interested in helping enshrine the next wave of Devils history can participate in the public selection process. The official ballot allows voters to select up to two nominees per category, making it entirely possible to support both Hughes and Dr. McMullen simultaneously in the Sports section."
Hughes, 24, has only been around for seven years now, but he has already overtaken the franchise's single-season scoring record, and you can be sure that his overtime Golden Goal feat for Team USA at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy played a significant role in getting him here.
As for McMullen, he was the original architect behind the operation that brought and kept the Devils in New Jersey. McMullen, who sadly passed in 2005, saw his Devils win all three of their Stanley Cups in 1995, 2000, and 2003, and was the one who purchased what was the Colorado Rockies and relocated them to the Meadowlands.
If we're honest, McMullen is long overdue for such an honor from New Jersey and New Jerseyans, but as they say, it is better late than never. As for Hughes, it's encouraging to see such a young player recognized early in his career for his contributions to the state and to his sport. If and when the former No. 1 pick gets inducted, that will be a well-deserved honor, as well.
For fans who want to vote for Hughes and McMullen, as well as deserving candidates in other categories besides sports, the Devils encourage you to vote here.
